iTunes for Windows: iPod Diagnostics

Summary

iTunes 7 or later for Windows includes an iPod Diagnostics feature that can assist you in troubleshooting an issue when trying to use your iPod with iTunes. It is important to understand that this feature tests iPod connectivity on a Windows PC running iTunes. iPod Diagnostics in iTunes does not test the hardware or software on the iPod itself.

Using iPod Diagnostics in iTunes

To begin using iPod Diagnostics in iTunes follow these steps:

  1. Install iTunes 7.0 or later
  2. Open iTunes and choose Run Diagnostics from the Help menu
  3. Select iPod Diagnostics and click Next

The resulting information (sample shown below) can help you troubleshoot iPod connectivity issues on a Windows PC.

iPod Diagnostics consists of the following four tests:

  • iTunes Service Status (also known as iPod Service)
  • iTunes Helper Status
  • USB/1394 Controllers Status (1394 is also known as FireWire)
  • iPod Connection Status

When the iPod Diagnostics results are displayed, a status light appears next to each test. A green light next to a particular test indicates that no problem was found. When iTunes detects a problem with a test, a red or yellow light is displayed and a Help button appears below the test name. The Help button will display troubleshooting information on the Apple support site that may resolve the issue.

In addition to the status lights and support content, iTunes displays a report detailing the software configuration for iTunes and related software in addition to information about USB and FireWire ports and the last connected iPod. This information can be useful in determining the source of the problem. This report can be copied or saved as a text file and shared with others who might be assisting you in resolving this issue. General troubleshooting information on the iPod support site can be accessed by clicking the Help button in the lower right corner of the iPod Diagnostics results window.

If you search around the internet, you will probably find many sites where you can download song for ipod. You will be confronted with thousands of free ipod download sites and you have the task of picking a site to download your favourite tv show or music album. While it is free, you might want to question the legality of these iPod music downloads. But what if I told you that you can download a song for your ipod 100% legally and cheap compared to itunes? I would say 90 percent of the ipod sites out there are illegal and you could be infringing copyright laws by downloading them. Please read the rest of this download song for ipod article to find out how you can benefit from some ipod sites.

One of the most popular ways to download a song for your ipod is apple’s itunes store. Why are there so many people paying 99 cents for a MP3 download from the apple itunes store? Movies and tv shows at itunes can cost anywhere between $2.39 to $13.99 for the newer shows.

Fortunately for people like myself who download song to ipod all the time, there are a few iPod download sites that offers unlimited mp3 and movies for a one time fee. They offer the same as the apple itunes store – mp3’s, movies and tv shows. They are safe and legal and save you tons of money in the long run.

Example Price Comparison:

Example Downloads iTunes price | ipod download price

Dreamgirls - Soundtrack $9.99.....................ZERO

The Office -Season 2........$34.99.....................ZERO

Lost - Season 2 ................$34.99.....................ZERO

Pirates of the Caribbean ....$9.99......................ZERO

Total Price:.......................$89.96.......................$39.95 one-time fee

However not all music download sites are the same. Here are 5 tips to choose you pick a good iPod download site and download a song for your ipod.

1. Music Download Sites Fees

Once writing this download song for ipod article I found that most iPod music download sites charge a one time charge for lifetime usage though some charge a monthly fee or fee per download. For the price of taking your significant other out to dinner, you can have unlimited access to MP3’s, videos, games, tv shows, and even sports.

2. Selection Available

If possible, try to find a site that offers you a wide selection of downloads from classical music to rock music as well as a large database of games or movies.

3.Download Speed

This refers to how long does it take to download a song for ipod from their site? It may not matter for a single mp3 since it is only a few megabytes but for videos and music albums, it can take a long time if the music download site is slow.

4. iPod Download Site Navigation

Can you easially find the rock mp3's in the music section in the website? Does the ipod download site provide instructions on how to download mp3 to your computer and iPod? And finally another question you might want to consider is do they provide instructions or programs on how to convert and download it to your iPod?

5.Technical Support

Does the iPod music download site provide support? Sometimes you will run into problems and you will need help. This download song for ipod article recommends that your ipod download site should offer help via email, telephone, online chat or other methods.

Whats Inside Your iPod?

The iPod has become a part of the global culture, since its first introduction in October 2001. The portable music player and others of its kind have left their mark on society and social behavior. Many have gotten curious and wondered, what exactly is inside an iPod?

For an iPod video, here are the main hardware components contained inside the case.

There is a hard drive, of course, for storage. This hard drive is a 1.8 inch Toshiba one with 30, 60, or 80 GB capacity. It features a USB interface, and runs at 4200 rpm. It weighs only 1.7 ounces or 48 grams and manages to fit 30 GB (or more) onto a single platter. This comes to about 93.5 gigabits per square inch. This high density is made possible by the use of smaller, lighter sliders, as well as improved thin-film technology with higher sensitivity for the read/write heads and the platter.

Then there is a rechargeable lithium-ion 700 mAh, 3.7 V batteries, a typical battery using the latest technology to make it fit the iPod’s form factor with maximum performance.

Then of course a 2.5 inch TFT LCD. This display is 16-bit and has a resolution of 320×240 pixels. It is also extremely thin, measuring only 0.125 inches or 3.175 mm in depth.

The chips and other processors such as the Broadcom BCM2722 video chip and the Wolfson Microelectronics WM8758 codec are found on a single motherboard. Because of the iPod’s smaller size, these chips use thin-film technology to connect to one another instead of the plastic connectors that larger devices usually use.

Perhaps the most interesting hardware in the iPod is the click wheel mechanism. Incorporated into this mechanism are five mechanical buttons corresponding to play/pause, forward, backward, menu, and the middle select button. These work much the same as other electronic buttons: by pressing them, metal contacts are made which complete the appropriate circuits on the motherboard.

The touch-sensitive wheel itself works much like a laptop’s touchpad does. In fact, Synaptics, a company widely known for its production of laptop touchpads, provided the touch wheels for the 4G iPod. (But Apple came up with its own proprietary design for the 5G iPod’s clickwheel.) The main concept behind this touch-sensitive hardware is that the touch of a human finger (or anything else that might conduct electricity) induces a change in the capacitance of the mechanism, which can be tracked via a built-in grid.

What software is then used with this hardware, to complete the iPod unit? The iPod 5G reportedly runs on the Pixo OS 2.1 operating system. Along with this comes PortalPlayer’s Digital Media Platform, which includes support for audio decoders, firmware customizations, as well as other software development tools. And of course software for the corresponding video and audio chips come installed on every iPod.

iPod Cases, Styles, Colours, Designs

There are hundreds of different iPod cases to choose from. When you search “iPod case” on eBay, there is page after page of search results. So how do you choose an iPod case for your iPod? This might sound simple but many people buy an iPod case and 1 month later, are unhappy with it. By reading this article you will be able to confidently choose an iPod case that you will be able to use for the rest of your iPods life.

Where should I buy my iPod case? This is completely up to you. You could either buy online or offline. The advantage of buying offline is that you will be able to look at and get a feel of the cover before you buy it. There are many different places where iPod cases are available to buy, there places include markets, department shops and apple computer shops. Keep in mind that you will be paying full price for your cover. You would be surprised how much more expensive it is compared to online websites.

Or you can buy online. Some online shops include apple, eBay and many, many others. The official apple shop has a great extensive range of iPod cases. They will specifically tell you what case suits what iPod and you can even do an advanced search to search for items only of your model. When buying on eBay there are literally thousands to choose from and often they are not available in retail shops or the official apple site. If you have brought on eBay before you would have more experience. If you are new to eBay, I would recommend sticking to other websites.

There are many other online stores from apple and eBay. When you do a Google search you will fine quite a few well known sites that have an extensive range of cases. Out of all the sites, apple is probably the easiest and you have a very good chance that you will not be scammed. Whether you choose to buy online or offline, these next instructions are very important. When choosing the design of the case you should have a good idea of the type of case you want. Some people are looking for protective cases and others are buying a case based on the idea to make their iPod look better.

When choosing a protective case, have a good idea of how protected you want your iPod to be. If you know that your iPod will be thrown around a bit and receive potentially dangerous bumps, I would recommend that you consider buying a fully enclosed case. With some protective cases, you have to remove the iPod before use and with others you can use your iPod when the case is on. Protective cases that are for use when you are using your iPod, there is only one major problem. Often these cases have holes for the screen and also the click wheel. Having a big hole for the screen in a case is only wasting your money. The screen is the most important part of your iPod, protect it.

The other types of protective cases are ones where you have to remove your iPod before using. I highly recommend using these. They are most effective from protecting your iPod from dangerous bumps. If you are worried about your iPod getting scratched then you might consider buying an iPod skin also. Most people buy a cover are for protection and usually protective cases don’t look so good. It all comes down to how much you respect your iPod, they do not naturally last for long so you do not want to reduce its life any further, do you?

Next I will talk about color. When choosing the color for your new case, it is up to you what you choose. Just keep in mind that you will be looking at it for however long you use it for. Choose your favorite color or be safe and stick with black or grey.

When choosing the material, it is another question of how much you want to protect your iPod. Choose metal or hard plastic if you want to protect it from hard bumps. If you want a good looking case that also has some amount of protection, the leather cases are great. I have owned one for 7 months and have not grown sick of it. The leather stops my iPod from getting scratched and has a decent amount of padding. I was very happy when I purchased the cover and I still am.

That is about it. If you see something you like but it is too expensive, look around at different stores either online or offline. When I brought my leather iPod case, It was very expensive in the shops and on apple store. I decided to look on eBay. I found what I was looking for and it was 5 times cheaper. The payment was very easy and I received my cover in 4 days. In conclusion, eBay is great for buying iPod covers but if you have not used eBay before, there are many other places to buy them.

iPod Games

The trend of iPods being music only is long gone. With the release of the 5th generation iPod last year, it has changed the way we think about iPods. Not only do they play music, but they also allow us to watch movies. The iPod community was shocked when Apple announced the release of several games for the iPod.

In the second half of last year, apple released a number of games to be purchased from iTunes music store. The games include Sudoku, Ms Pac Man, iQuiz, Vortex, Tetris, Texas Holdem, Cubis 2, Zuma, Pac Man, Mini Golf, Mahjong, Bejeweled and Royal Solitaire. The games can be purchased at iTunes music store for $4.99 each.

The games currently only work on 5th generation iPods (iPod Video). There is a huge range of different games to choose from. Just about everyone will find something that they like and is enjoyable for them to play.

The release of these few games was a highly successful release for Apple. Within a few weeks there was a huge amount of users across the globe that purchased one or more of the games. There is a rumor that there will be another set of new iPod games released very soon for the 6 month anniversary since the first games were released.

iPod FM Transmitter

For those who want to listen to their digital music files on the car sound system, an iPod FM transmitter is a feasible option.

FM transmitters are devices that can connect to digital audio players such as the iPod, and convert the playback of digital music (such as mp3s and other such file formats) into radio waves such that they can be received and played by a radio tuned to the appropriate frequency. These devices can actually be used with any radio, but they are most usually used with car radios, to allow headphones-free listening to the iPod while driving.

But, wait, aren’t there any other options for connecting an iPod to the car’s audio system? Well, yes. So-called “cassette converters” are available, but these come with a mess of wires, and obviously need a cassette tape player onboard. Most modern cars do not sport cassette players anymore, and getting one just for the purpose of using a converter is not exactly a neat solution.

Integrated iPod controllers are also available from a variety of car audio manufacturers such as Alpine, Kenwood, and Pioneer. These offer better sound quality than either FM transmitters or cassette converters, but have to be installed by professionals into your car, and usually range in price in the hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars. These controllers are also often burdened by clunky, slow interfaces, at least compared with the interface of the iPod itself. And of course, these are not exactly portable, and will remain bundled with the car even if the time may come to sell the vehicle.

So we return to FM transmitters. These devices connect to the iPod in a variety of ways. The most versatile of these connect using only a standard headphone plug, and can thus be used for portable CD or DVD players and other audio devices as well. Some FM transmitters also come with their own power supply, usually AA or AAA batteries, which make installation nonexistent. Simply plug the device into your iPod, take any necessary setup steps and you will be well on your way to having your iPod playing on your car audio system.

However, FM transmitters are not perfect. Being FM transmitters, they need a clear frequency to utilize. Otherwise, interference from radio stations and the like may overpower the signal from your iPod. This is especially a problem in urban areas with many frequencies occupied by radio stations. The sound quality also takes quite a loss through most of these transmitters. Different transmitters differ in the audio quality they deliver, with portability and ease of installation usually being the trade offs. The best FM transmitters in terms of sound quality are usually more difficult to install, not to mention more costly.

For price and convenience, a good iPod FM transmitter simply can not be beat. The loss in audio quality may be quite noticeable, but as technology continues to improve, newer models of these transmitters are likely to gain better sound support.

iPod VS Zune

Competition is rising between iPod and Zune. Microsoft has just recently launched Zune but already, it is starting to gain popularity in the market. On the other hand, iPod has been around much longer and people have been enjoying the features and capabilities that it offers.

Because both Apple and Zune generally have much the same price range, it cannot be helped that people are comparing these two top brands with each other. In order to find out which one is really the better choice, perhaps we should take a look at the advantages that each has to offer.

Let’s see what people found great about Microsoft’s Zune:

• Better design. If you would interview people who have used both Zune and iPod, most will tell you that they absolutely love Zune’s wide screen. This makes video watching more enjoyable and makes more easy to read texts. In fact, Microsoft has noticed that this is definitely one of iPod’s weaknesses so Microsoft decided to make Zune’s screen bigger.

• Works with Xbox. If you love to play games then you might choose this capability over iPod. Zune can be integrated with Xbox and Media Center. Also, Microsoft makes it possible for Zune to get upgrades easily.

Now, let’s talk about the advantages that iPod users enjoy:

• Small and convenient. Probably one of the greatest advantages of iPod is its size. It’s so compact and light that it’s easy to carry around on your travels. Its small size is remarkably outweighed by its large memory capacity and loads of different features.

• Ease of use. iPod is so easy to navigate so anyone won’t have any trouble using it. In fact, if you take a look at online reviews and see what iPod users have to say, most of them commented that the best thing about iPod is it’s really easy to use.

• High range of memory. Anyone who loves to store music can really appreciate iPod’s high memory storage capability. The latest iPod today allows a user to store up to 20 gigabytes or even an amazing 40 gigabyte file size. This means unlimited capacity to store up and listen to all your favorite songs in all genre of music that you’d like, watch your favorite videos and upload tons of photos.

• Shuffle Songs. iPod’s Shuffle Songs feature enables its users to select only the song that they want to hear. If you’re listening to a radio station, you can skip every song that you don’t appreciate and just focus on your favorite selections

• Boost your studies. Yes, that’s right. You can definitely use iPod to access educational materials, references, audio books and online courses offered in the internet. Aside from listening to your favorite music, iPod can be great tool in enhancing your studies and researching capabilities, making learning more convenient and easier for you.

• Let’s you accessorize. There are various iPod accessories that are especially designed to enhance your iPod. Because iPod is compatible with a wide range of accessories, it is so easy to add new things to your iPod whenever you have the extra money to do so.

In comparing iPod over Zune or other mp3 players, most people would prefer iPod over other brands. While Zune have some likable features over iPod, but being new to the market, more people are understandably skeptical over Zune’s capability and reliability. iPhone VS iPod

The iPhone has been popping up in technology websites and magazines ever since it was only a concept with no real basis in reality. Years of speculation about the product have proved it to be the most intently followed unconfirmed product in the history of Apple. Finally, on January 9, 2007, Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple, announced the iPhone, an Internet- and multimedia enabled mobile phone, in his keynote address at the Macworld Conference and Expo.

The iPhone’s functions combine those of three devices: a mobile phone, a widescreen iPod, and an Internet communications device. The iPhone also sports a slim and sleek form factor worthy of the Apple brand name. But by far the most striking thing about the iPhone is its huge touchscreen which almost completely takes up the front of the device.

The iPhone will not have a traditional keypad or even the iPod clickwheel, but will instead rely completely on a revolutionary new touch screen (dubbed a multi-touch display) for its user interface. The touch screen measures 3.5 inches or 8.9 cm, and is a 320×480 liquid crystal display. Unlike most current mobile phone touchscreens, the iPhone’s screen will not require a stylus, being designed for bare fingers.

This promises a new and novel way of manipulating the interface. Sliding motions can be used, as well as “pinching” or “unpinching”, which refers to placing two fingers (usually thumb and forefinger) on the screen and sliding them closer or farther apart. The interface will be designed to have a natural feel, and it is to be hoped that the whole touchscreen idea is implemented well.

The Internet browser of the iPhone is shaping up to be something special, as well. The bundled browser is the Safari browser that comes with Mac OS X, and this will display full web pages instead of the simplified versions usually seen on other Internet phones. The iPhone will have support for WiFi, EDGE, and Bluetooth.

An exciting feature is Apple’s agreement with Google – a specially optimized version of Google Maps will be available on the iPhone!

Generally, though, the iPhone will not be bringing any new mobile phone features into play, but will have support for most common phone features found on high-end units such as the various connectivity protocols (Bluetooth, EDGE, etc.) as well as the inclusion of a 2.0 megapixel camera with support for video capture.

The iPhone is indeed shaping up to be a formidable entrant into the mobile smartphone arena, with its typical Apple stylishness and (expected) well thought-out interface. However, as long as actual products are not yet out on the market, all this hype should be taken with a grain of salt. (Judge the iPhone for real when you have one in your hand, and not a moment before!)

How to Extend your iPod’s Life

There are a few simple things you could do to keep your iPod playing for longer as well as extending its battery’s life and good performance.

First off, you should know that moving from one track to other costs more power if the two are not related by a play list. Moving among unrelated tracks requires the iPod’s hard drive to keep spinning, draining battery life. A solution to conserve power is to simply create longer play lists that you could settle in to, instead of jumping around your iPod music library.

The hard drive and the way the iPod accesses its memory cache also works more efficiently with smaller file sizes. Specifically, files larger than 9 MB would put more stress on the iPod. Typical songs do not usually reach this file size if they are in the compressed formats such as MP3 or AAC, but uncompressed AIFF files may prove quite large and unwieldy. Large file sizes may also be reached by tracks consisting of more than one song such as medleys. The only remedy to this is to try and keep your iPod library’s songs’ file sizes down to manageable levels (<9>

Another way to prolong the iPod’s battery life is to decrease the amount of time the backlight remains turned on, or even turn it off entirely. The backlight may be a great help in seeing the screen, but it drains the battery a whole lot. If you are interested in getting the most playing time out of a single battery charge, you should adjust the backlight timer settings accordingly.

It could also pay off to get into the habit of turning the iPod off when not in use. Or if you would prefer not to turn it off when not in use, at least use the Hold switch located at the top of the iPod. This switch, when engaged, will disable the controls and prevent the iPod from skipping through tracks or other unintentional behavior.

The iPod battery was not designed for extremes in temperature, and its performance might decrease noticeably in especially hot or especially cold conditions. So, avoid leaving the iPod inside a parked car that would be likely to heat up, or exposed to direct sunlight. If the iPod is left out in the cold for too long, on the other hand, be sure to let it warm back up to room temperature first before attempting to turn it on again - or it might flash the low battery signal even though it might have some charge left.

And lastly, even when the iPod is not getting used, its battery gets drained completely in a period of about two to four weeks. Recharge the iPod every 28 days or so, then, to keep it in optimum shape, as it shouldn’t be left with an empty battery for long.

iPod-Playlist Community - Welcome Everyone!

Thanks for dropping in at www.iPod-Playlist.com. Our goal is to provide you with the most up-to-date news, reviews and gossip on the MP3 industry.

We encourage everyone to submit their own personal iPod (or any MP3) Playlist so other visitors can comment on them or just compare their own tastes.

You don't need to join to submit your playlist but you do need to join to comment on them.

Social Distortion's Live At The Roxy is one of my favorite live albums. Unfortunately, when I played it on the iPod, I found a glaring pause between songs as the album moved from one song to the next.

It's a classic problem that plagues portable audio players, but we've got a way around it in both iTunes and the iPod.

iTunes: Crossfade Playback

I didn't notice those gaps between the tracks when I played the live album in iTunes on my PC because it was set to crossfade playback.

Crossfade playback acts like a DJ, and blends the songs in your playlist together trunk to tail.

To turn on crossfade playback in iTunes:

Select File.

Select Preferences.

Click on the Audio tab, and select "crossfade playback."

You can customize how long the songs overlap, from 0 to 12 seconds. (The latter can be a bit much for anything but dance music with similar beats, while 0 seconds works well to string together songs without a pause in between.)

iPod: Join CD Tracks

Unfortunately, crossfade playback won't eliminate the pause between songs when they're playing on your iPod. There's only one known cure for that, joining your CD tracks, and it's a tad extreme.

First, it can only be done when you rip an album.

Second, it combines all the songs you select into one giant track. (A 1 hour 16 minutes and 41 second track for our Social D album.)

That means if it turns up in Shuffle mode, you're going to have one long listen before the next track comes up!

To join CD tracks:

Load the CD for the album and select it in iTunes.

Click the top of the first column so that the blue triangle points up and the songs are in order from first to last.

Select two or more songs that are next to each other.

Select Advanced > join CD tracks.

Click the Import button to add the songs.

But What If You Want To Shuffle Songs?

Want to have a joined album and still be able to play individual tracks? Rename the file with the joined album in it, or move the giant track into another folder, then rip the album again without joining the tracks. Voila: separate tracks for your mixes and the entire album without pauses.

Timex's iPod-controlling i-Control watch hits the FCC

Chalk another one up to the rumor mill, as it looks like the leaked PowerPoint slide we saw just last month was indeed referring to an actual product. Thanks to an FCC filing, we now know that Timex is actually cranking out a Made for iPod timepiece in its Ironman series. The i-Control isn't the most handsome of watches, but it will be available in a water-resistant casing, sport Indiglo backlighting, and play nice with your dock connecting iPod. According to the documentation, users will clip an included RF transmitter into their Pod, which will allow the watch to control the volume, track, and play / pause function so long as the it's within "about ten feet" of your wrist. Of course, it still sports the same alarm, chrono, recall, and interval timer modes as the rest of its siblings, but unfortunately, it doesn't look like you'll see any scrolling track tags on this one. As expected, there's no word on price just yet, but click on through for a more detailed shot of it all sprawled out.

iTunes Music Store

If you aim to update your music files or if you are planning to download more music for your iPod, you must be knowledgeable about the iTunes music store. The iTunes music store would the legal portal you must use when downloading MP3 or other types of music files for whatever version or type of iPods you may have.

There are many ways on how you usually download MP3 files online. And whether you admit it or not, for sure, there are illegal measures you inevitably take to download music. There are numerous Web sites that exist to distribute music downloads for lesser prices, or most of the time, for free. This is actually piracy and is a form of stealing.

Now that iPods are becoming too popular and widely used by electronic consumers from all walks of life, iPods are considered staple gadgets. Portable music listening anytime, anywhere, is never the same again since people started heavily patronizing iPod products.

Apple Computer Inc, the maker of the phenomenal iPods, wants to contribute to the industry’s battle against unauthorized downloading of music. Through its iTunes music store, which is actually the legal and prescribed portal for iPod downloading of files, piracy can be prevented.

ITunes music store surely helps make sure that every song to be downloaded into an iPod is legally acquired. Thus, iTunes transactions are not free most of the time. However, downloads from iTunes are sure to be of the highest standards and quality. There are no jumping parts of the song, nor are there unwanted sounds.

Your iPod would surely take its much-needed content through the iTunes. You can also facilitate for connectivity between the iPod and your personal computer. Thus, you could easily manage your files and make use of them through the computer.

Imagine if you are still resorting to the illegal way of downloading iPod music. You are contributing to the slow killing of the music industry. Plus, you are patronizing music downloads that are of low quality. You would surely not make use of the superior iPod music superiority if you keep on using such illegal download means.

Plus, Apple Computer is ensuring that iPods would not be able to download illegal files or music. There is a program in iTunes music store that would only authorize legal and permissible downloads. Do not patronize other download services for your iPods aside from the prescribed and appropriate iTunes music store.

iPod Software

Since the iPod became commercially available, many users have wished additional functionality, and those among those users savvy enough with software and programming were able to come up with unofficial iPod software to fulfill their wants.

The official iPod software itself is (as of the fifth generation) reportedly the Pixo OS 2.1 operating system, along with PortalPlayer’s Digital Media Platform. This Digital Media Platform is actually a “system on a chip” that comes with support for customizable firmware, audio decoders, and other software development tools. The iPod interface is also reportedly based on the Pixo Toolbox software (this software was available when Apple was just creating the iPod).

At present, iTunes and the iPod interface are not the only pieces of software that can be associated with and supported on the iPod. Third party software and programs designed to run on the iPod are commonly called iPod hacks, although unlike what the name implies almost none of these software have malicious intent. (However, use of third party software may indeed void the iPod’s warranty, meaning that the people at your local Apple Genius Bar might not be able to help anymore if you decide to modify your iPod’s software or hardware.)

One of the most drastic and effective hacks is getting Linux to run on your iPod. A group called the iPodLinux Project has come up with a way to port Linux to an iPod, as well as a Linux user interface they have called podzilla. Linux is a full-featured operating system, and with Linux on your iPod, it becomes much more like a portable PC than just a digital audio device.

Linux on the iPod allows for the playback of previously unsupported music file formats, such as OGG files. In addition, the appearance of the interface (podzilla) can be easily modified by downloading schemes to your iPod. And, lastly and most importantly, what are called modules can now be downloaded and used on your iPod. These modules are basically applications designed for use with the iPodLinux system.

Now, as can be expected, a lot of these modules are now available, with iPodLinux having been around for intrepid programmers to play with for quite a while. Among the most popular of these are ports of games that are now playable on the iPod. Such games as Doom – a first-person shooter, Bejeweled – a puzzle game, Space Invaders – a space shooter, and even classics such as Pacman have been ported over to the iPod. Other useful hacks include increasing the memory of an iPod Nano, turning the iPod into a universal remote control, and even support for the creation of text files!

Who would’ve thought that the iPod software and hardware would be capable of all these things? And these “iPod hackers” are far from finished.

Tips for caring for your iPod

There are several tips for caring for your iPod. Because your iPod is a truly well loved device, you are rendering significant importance to it. Thus, you should always make sure that your iPod is safe and secure. And when you say safe, it does not mean that you should always keep your iPod at a secure place. Of course, you need to use the gadget whenever, wherever you need it. Thus, there should measures that should help you protect the device.

Like any other device, the iPod is very fragile. Thus, avoid dropping the gadget to the floor whenever possible. If that happens, make sure you would never accidentally do it again. You could use an iPod sock where the iPod could be safely placed for such protection. Because of the accessory’s soft cushion, you can be sure the iPod would still be safe even if its drops. Plus, such socks also provide temporary protection from moist and water drops.

As fro operating the iPod, you are allowed to operate the device continuously for about 12 to 14 hours non-stop. Although there is no specific warning about using the gadget much longer than that, be aware and let the device take some rest. You know that any machine running 24 hours nonstop is more susceptible to troubles.

Use the iTunes music store to download music files. The online portal has been specifically instituted for iPod users’ downloading requirements. Now, you can also download videos from this store.

Another tip would be to invest even in cheap silicon cases. You know that the exterior of the iPod very well says a lot about the entire device. It is true that the case makes or breaks the iPod, at least, in terms of being fashionable. Many such cases are sold in the market and you would not have a hard time finding and buying them.

Another problem surrounding iPods is the cords, which tend to tangle. To resolve problems with earphone cords, you can opt to buy wireless headsets in the market. These accessories are far more expensive than the conventional earphones but they are highly functional, very beneficial and are extremely fashionable.

For the battery, the makers of iPods advise users to operate the device in temperatures ranging from 0?C up to 35?C or 32?F to 95?F. Do not leave the gadget under direct exposure to sunlight because the battery might be the first to be affected, which might lead to explosion. Likewise, do not leave the iPod inside the car when you are parking under direct sunlight. The temperature would surely rise and in turn might directly pressure and heat up the battery, which can cause explosion or fire.

There are many tips for caring for your iPod. But overall, the best tip would be to love your device and responsibly use it.

iPod Repair

You need an iPod repair if your iPod suddenly stops working. You must be so hooked up with this portable music player that you would practically not be comfortable without it. But just like any gadget, iPod is susceptible to breaking and would surely cease operating after some time. For some cases, the device may undergo damages that can manifest as soon as after the purchase.

If you are seeking for an iPod repair service, Apple Computer Inc, the manufacturer of the device, is offering such repair services. You would be sure that the service would be safe and would ensure that you iPod would be totally okay. But if you want other repair services from other repair technicians, you can still actually do so. It would cost less. However, prior to that, make sure your Apple warranty is expired or you would break it.

While some say that undergoing repair would make your iPod’s performance deteriorated, experts believe otherwise. Of course, iPod repair would do you an advantage because you would be able to enjoy your iPod again after it has been damaged. Repairs would help you generate savings because iPod repair is still farm less costly than actually buying a new unit of the music player.

You see, while it is true that brand new units of iPod are truly better than the old or the slightly used ones, you can save significantly higher amounts of money if you would be patient to bear using your old and reliable iPod. By the way, it is estimated that the gadget would last long if proper care and regular damage repair services are maintained.

Through iPod repair services, you could opt not to buy a brand new iPod unit. You could just spend a little amount of money for the repair services and voila, you can enjoy listening to your music tracks again, anytime, anywhere.

Good iPod repair services can also be an opportunity to fine tune or make the settings of the iPod good. You might be an expert to using your gadget already, but for sure, there are manufacturer settings that you know little of. Setting these manufacturer standards would surely make your iPod perform better.

Overall, subjecting your iPod to an appropriate iPod repair service would be to your advantage. Aside from customizing your music player gadget, you can be sure that any damages, both minor and major, would be fixed and offset.

What You Need To Know About Ipod Docking Stations

The iPod docking station is probably the “must have” accessory to go with your iPod, especially if you are a constant or frequent user. The docking station allows the iPod to fully charge while still allowing the listener to enjoy their music without interruption. The docking station also keeps the iPod safe and secure, avoiding the chance of damage if it were simply left on a chair or on a table.

There are several different options in iPod docking stations and the choice is largely one of price and convenience. For the tiny iPod Nano, a simple docking cradle gives the basic stability to the player and allows the Nano to be synched to the computer for downloads while charging. While the simple cradle does not have speakers of its own, an audio-out port allows the Nano in the docking cradle to be connected to external speakers, headphones, or even through your computer to play all your favorite songs while charging the battery. Typically these smaller cradle style docking stations are less than $20.00 US.

Larger docking stations for iPod Video or MP3 players typically have built-in speakers on either side of the docking cradle. These speakers are designed to be ultra high quality to preserve the sound from the iPod itself. Many of the larger docking stations come with surround sound speakers, subwoofers, tweeters and 3-D sound processors for an amazing sound quality from a small package. As with the simple cradle docking stations, the iPod is easily connected to the computer with a USB cable or FireWire connection. This allows synchronizing and downloading of songs while charging the batteries on the iPod and listening to tracks through the speakers.

Some docking stations have optional battery power to charge the iPods, typically using four or more AA batteries. This additional battery feature makes it an ideal choice for having to connect to a computer in areas where there are not enough power outlets, or even for playing and charging your iPod outside or in remote areas. Most of the larger, speaker-equipped docking stations range in price from $30.00 to under $100.00. There are some very unique in-wall docking stations that keep your iPod in a safely recessed dock that is permanently mounted to a wall behind or near your computer, but these are usually quite a bit more expensive. In addition many of the docking stations also have radios and additional features to make them more versatile.

When purchasing an iPod docking station it is important to carefully read what size and type of iPod the docking station can handle. Typically iPod docking stations will have additional inserts to allow them to hold a Nano but not all can hold the smaller, new generation of iPods.

Pricey, hard-to-replace battery has lots of iPods users throwing them out

Environmentalists are targeting the iPod, Apple Computer's phenomenally successful digital music player, as a symbol of the growing problem of electronic waste.

The Computer Take Back Campaign, an umbrella organization for dozens of environmental groups, is trying to force Apple to beef up its recycling program and to redesign the iPod, which has a battery that can wear out in just 18 months and is not easily replaced.

Last month, protesters gathered outside the company's Cupertino, Calif., headquarters carrying signs including messages like "from iPod to iWaste -- toxic trash in your pocket" and "Dell and HP do, why don't you?"

Protesters also turned up at the company's recent Macworld Expo in San Francisco. and have generated thousands of letters to Apple Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs. They are vowing to take their complaints to shareholders at the company's annual meeting in April.

"If they think we're going away, they are wrong," said Robin Schneider, executive director of the Texas Campaign for the Environment, part of the coalition. "All they have to do is call up Dell and they will find out we're very persistent."

Two years ago, the campaign targeted Dell, one of the world's largest PC manufacturers. Dell wound up revising its policies so that customers can ship their old computers free to the company for recycling.

Apple charges a $30 fee to recycle computers and generally does not go out of its way to make it easy for customers to recycle, environmentalists said.

Apple has avoided any public acknowledgement of the complaints.

Over the next few years, an estimated 300 million to 600 million desktop and laptop computers in the United States will become obsolete. Hundreds of toxic chemicals and heavy metals are used in the manufacture of computers, cell phones and other electronics, many of which end up in landfills or incinerators after only a few years.

The iPod, launched in October 2001, has an internal, non-removable, lithium-based rechargeable battery. Like many iPod customers, New York City filmmakers Casey and Van Neistat found that after 18 months of use the battery's ability to recharge had eroded to the point where it would die after only an hour's use.

"It was unusable," said Casey Neistat, 23. "It was like having a cell phone that works for just one call."

When the Neistat brothers contacted Apple, they were told it would cost them $250 to replace the battery -- roughly what it cost to buy the iPod.

Incensed, the Neistats made a three-minute movie, "iPod's Dirty Secret," about the non-replaceable battery and put it on their Web site. The movie has been viewed more than 2 million times.

The poor publicity doesn't appear to have hurt sales. Apple has sold more than 10 million iPods, and the company's stock has surged 270 percent since the iPod was introduced.

Apple now offers a two-year warranty on the battery for $50. After that, customers have to ship the iPod to Apple and pay $100 to have the battery replaced.

Critics say the inconvenience and high cost of replacing the battery encourages customers to throw away their iPods after only a couple of years.

"The iPod is an example of the kind of poor design and obsolescence that's occurring in the electronics industry," said Sheila Davis of the Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition, part of the campaign. "We want Apple to assume some responsibility."

Replacing Your Old Apple iPod Battery

Apple has done a great job in providing a portable Music Player in the Apple iPod, with its simple design and great looks you would think it has no faults. BUT for one thing, the BATTERY LIFE! Everyone reading this knows what I am talking about, Apple has continued to produce sub standard battery life in their iPods since they started making them. What happens to your iPod and music if the battery runs out due to long use? You would think that is the end of the road for your iPod but it is possible to replace the battery in your iPod with a little DIY and a replacement battery. Battery manufacturers knew that the iPod had poor battery life and decided to get in on the act, they usually provide kits that include a replacement battery for your iPod and also neoprene tools so you don’t damage your iPod when replacing the battery. Looking at your iPod would suggest to you that you cannot open the iPod from any side but it can be done. READ ON!

Since the iPod has no screws or rivets to open it, you would think to yourself how can I possibly get into this iPod to replace the battery. It is done my applying pressure at the side of the iPod to squeeze up the metal and then trying to insert the neoprene tools to try and open the Ipod. Full instructions below:

IPOD BATTERY REPLACEMENT INSTRUCTIONS

• Put your iPod face down on a piece of cloth or a non scratch surface. Using the neoprene opening tools, press your fingers into the iPod metal back case to try and get an opening so you can insert the tools, slowly insert it under the cover and begin to pry off the cover. NOTE: this can take quite a bit of force in the 3g iPods, but the 1g,2g,and 4g are not too difficult in opening. You should hear it crack open, don’t worry if you hear a crack, this is just the iPod case opening. Work your way around by sliding the tool all around the edges.

• The iPod is made up of two halves. The first half is the empty shell and the other half is the part that includes the hard drive and the most important thing-the BATTERY.You will see that the battery is connected to the main circuit board of your iPod. Now take a note of what side of the connector plugs in. Carefully unplug the old battery by pulling on the end of the connector. Take a lot of care on this as you do not want to ruin your hard drive and therefore messing up your iPod. Make sure to take your time.

• Get your new battery and plug in into the connector socket on your iPod’s circuit board. The connector will only go in one way so do make sure you insert it the right way up. Do not try and force the connector in if it doesn’t fit in.

• Once it’s all connected up, put the cover back on by pressing the edges of the two halves together. Always take your time when changing your battery!!

• Plug your charger in and let your new iPod charge up for at least 3-4 hours. All new batteries should get a longer than normal charge the first time around. Try and let your iPod charge and recharge a few times to get the most out of your battery.

The 24 Hour iPod Battery

The 24 hour iPod Battery: Fact or Fiction? It would be great if our iPods could play non-stop for 24 hours but is it really possible that such a battery exists? How does consumer usage effect the iPod battery life and can such a tiny design space truly accommodate the capacity specifications required to power an iPod for 24 hours?

Apple has just introduced the completely remastered iPod Nano. The new Nano is more of the same with the exception of its new ability to hold up to 2,000 songs and can come to you in 5 new colors.

Apple’s marketing spin touts that the remastered iPod Nano, with its new anodized aluminum enclosure and rounded edges, makes the iPod nano look as dazzling as it feels. Apple says the new iPod Nano is sleeker than ever—3.5 inches tall, 1.6 inches wide, and just over quarter of an inch thin. Plus with the iPod Nano’s brighter color screen, album art & photos gain even more brilliance thanks to a 1.5-inch color display that's 40% brighter than before. The new iPod Nano’s can come in silver, green, pink, blue, and black.

Apple also announced new movie downloads from their iTune service. You can buy and download movies starting at $10.00. The final announcement from Apple is that they unveiled a new 80 Gb iPod Video player.

All of these new announcements would be great if they were coupled with a practical 24 hour battery life for watching those movies and listening to those iTunes and MP3 files! The reality is contrary to that! For example:

The ipod battery life of an ipod classic with a 2200 mAh, measured in hours is UP TO 20 hours, or 79% longer than the original ipod classic battery.

The ipod battery life of an ipod 3rd gen with a 850 mAh, measured in hours is UP TO 13 hours or 35% longer than the original ipod 3rd gen battery.

The ipod battery life of an ipod 4th gen with a 830 mAh, measured in hours is UP TO 12 hours or 32% longer than the original ipod 4th gen battery.

The ipod battery life of an ipod mini with a 500 mAh, measured in hours is UP TO 6 hours or 25% longer than the original ipod mini battery.

The ipod battery life of an ipod photo with a 900 mAh, measured in hours is UP TO 14 hours or 29% longer than the original ipod photo battery.

When considering battery life claims remember to consider just like Apple’s legal team is careful to stipulate that the real nature of iPod Batteries is that the iPod battery can power iPods “Up to” the indicated times with music playback only. Also like Apple’s legal stipulations “Rechargeable batteries have a limited number of charge cycles and may eventually need to be replaced and that battery life and number of charge cycles vary by use and settings.”

The legal stipulation that Apple makes clear can be broken down as follows:

First, rechargeable iPod batteries once their useful life is complete will stop working. This is no surprise since a battery is a device that stores chemical energy and through an electrochemical process (electromotive force) converts the stored chemical energy into electric energy via a direct current. The chemical conversion is a process of chemical change created by adding or losing chemical substances (electrons, oxygen, lithium etc.) inside the battery and used by a connecting iPod. As the chemical conversion begins a reaction produces an electron flow. Once the chemical is activated oxidation and reduction occurs and the flow of electrons takes place, thereby creating a direct electrical current. Considering that electrons flow 62 quintillion per second (62,000,000,000,000,000,000 electrons per second) then it takes only a very small moment for power to be created and here is the kicker – the only way to stop the electron flow is to let the chemical exhaust itself! The chemical inside the iPod battery can be activated by placing a load on the battery (i.e. by connecting your battery to a device regardless if the device is turned on). Once the load is placed on the iPod battery electrons collect on the negative electrode, when an electrolyte separates and conducts electrons between the negative electrode and the positive electrode. This flow creates a current. The electron current, or electricity, can then be directed to an iPod and used as a power stream. Once electrical current is established then the only way to stop it is to let the chemical degrade to the point where the capacity is almost non-existent. This is called battery degradation and begins once the chemistry has been activated. Battery degradation is the normal wear and tear effect of battery usage and its inevitable effects are declining capacity, increasing internal resistance, elevated self-discharge, and premature voltage cut-off on discharge.

Second, iPod Battery life and number of charge cycles vary by use and settings. What this means is that Apple designed the iPod battery to power an iPod under specific conditions (i.e. controlled test conditions). From those tests Apple made their claim about the iPod battery life span. There is nothing wrong with this whatsoever; however what is critical to remember is that consumers don't live in a controlled test environment. Having worked with hundreds of thousands of battery users I can tell you confidently that every user of rechargeable battery devise (i.e. iPods, PDAs, Laptops, DVD Players, Cameras, Cellphones) user their device slightly different. These differences impact how long or how little your rechargeable battery will last. This is a fact. You can test this yourself by using your iPod battery in different tests and time each test to see how long your battery will last. It will be different each time.

But regarding Apple’s iPod battery life claim again the key phrase to remember is "up to". So even if the battery lasts an hour Apple is legally covered!

For example Apple claims that the 30GB iPod Video will play music for 14 hours, photo and music slideshows for 3 hours, and iPod on-screen video for 2 hours. In a iLounge test they found that the new iPod Video played music for 15 hours and 30 minutes, photo slideshows for 2 hours and 32 minutes, on-iPod video for 2 hours and 10 minutes, and iPod-to-TV video for 3 hours and 10 minutes.

Apple also claims that the new 60GB iPod will play music for 20 hours, photo and music slideshows for 4 hours, and video for 3 hours. Again in In a iLounge test they found that the new iPod Video played music for 19 hours, 50 minutes, but exceeded Apple’s photo and video claims, playing a music photo slideshow for 4 hours, 47 minutes, iPod-screen video for 3 hours, 23 minutes, and on-TV video for a hefty 5 hours and 24 minutes.

But again everyone may experience slightly different battery life play times. For example here is a situation from a user quoted from the Apple fourms:

"It is clear that when you use the click wheel a lot, you assume that your battery life gets smaller quickly. I had a problem with my ipod 5G 30Gb battery life : Firstly, I charged it (as soon as i received it) until the plug icon appeared on the screen (1h 30mn) . Then I listened music 'til it was fully discharged. The battery life was approximately 8hrs. Then, this battery life decreased to 5hrs last day. I called Applecare ; the guy told me to restore my ipod, then to let it discharge fully, and to refill it for 4 hrs even if the plug icon appear on the ipod screen. After that, I synchronized ipod to itunes and let it play all night long to see the battery life now. It played music with default settings during 15hrs 'til it shut down. These are the Apple specifications for that ipod. My problem wasn't the battery, but the battery life calibration, which has not been done as it should."

The reality is all batteries including batteries designed specifically for iPods (regardless of generation) have a certain amount of capacity and once the full amount of the capacity has been used then your battery will stop working. This is the normal function of battery design.

In fact consider this taken from Apple iPod Warranty Care: "Your one year warranty includes replacement coverage for a defective battery. You can extend your coverage to two years with AppleCare Protection Plan. During the second year, Apple will replace the battery if it drops below 50% of its original capacity. If it is out of warranty, Apple offers a battery replacement for $59, plus $6.95 shipping. Apple disposes your battery in an environmentally-friendly manner." So basically Apple is correctly telling you that your battery will die with time and use. No questions about that; and that Apple is telling you that your battery replacement plan will cost you a total of $59, plus $6.95 shipping. Folks: iPod batteries can be bought for $9.99 depending on your iPod model.

The admittance by Apple that your ipod battery will eventually die is based on real limitations of the battery's internal design specifically the iPod battery’s capacity.

New iPod, New iPhone In the Works

Are you ready for a whole wallop of Apple rumors? Well get out your biggest spoon, because this latest round is going to make for a huge scoop of iPod and iPhone-flavored goodness. For starters, a smaller, cheaper iPhone is apparently in the works that will compete directly against the official successor to the Motorola RAZR (most people just refer to it as the RAZR2).

The new Apple cell phone -- it's being referred to as the iPhone Nano, but it could very well take on a more conventional form factor like the RAZR's clamshell or the RIZR's slider -- is rumored to hit shelves before Christmas, selling for an unsubsidized price of about $300. This places it much more within the reach of the average consumer, just as the shuffle and the nano did for the iPod line. In order to reach this price, Apple will likely ditch the multi-touch display and just go for a circular scroll wheel.

The other side of the coin shows a new iPod. That family of products is clearly due for some sort of update and it seems like the newest iPod will borrow features from the first-generation iPhone. It's unlikely they'll go multi-touch, but the new music player will probably get a bigger screen, more storage capacity, and "other valuable features which often come at lower prices."

Apple Retains Its Touch for Design

"Apple makes revolution accessible to everybody," says Paola Antonelli, curator of architecture and design at New York's Museum of Modern Art, hailing the glossy black iPhone as yet another milestone in product design.

Like the iconic Apple products that preceded it, the glass-face iPhone, with its rounded-edge, slim silver frame and multi-touch display screen combining phone, iPod and Internet access, is likely to influence the design of more-mundane household appliances such as refrigerators and microwave ovens. "The interface on this phone is not only easy to use and have fun with, it's universally understandable," Antonelli says.

The candy-colored translucence of iMac computers, beginning with Bondi blue in 1998, set off a wave of color in irons, vacuum cleaners and sewing machines. Three years later, the clean lines and click-wheel control panel of the iPod started showing up in ovens and ranges.

Apple simply sets the bar higher for everybody, Antonelli says. "It's been decades since we have seen a company with such design power."

Using portable music player in lightning is dangerous

A Canadian doctor Thursday warned in a report in the New England Journal of Medicine that using a portable music player such as an Apple Inc. iPod outdoors when lightning threatens can be dangerous.

"Most people hit by lightning get away with minor burns," said Dr. Eric Heffernan at Vancouver General Hospital in Vancouver, British Columbia, who is also the lead author of the report, which looks at instances of people who are struck by lightning while attached to electronic devices.

"It's because skin is highly resistant and stops electricity from entering the body. It's called the flashover effect -- although it can stop your heart and kill you."

Being plugged into earbuds -- a style of tiny headphone -- or other electronic devices can change the physics of flashovers.

Contrary to some urban legends and media reports, electronic devices don't attract lightning the way a tall tree or a lightning rod does.

"It's going to hit where it's going to hit, but once it contacts metal, the metal conducts the electricity," said Dr. Mary Ann Cooper of the American College of Emergency Physicians and an ER doctor at University of Illinois Medical Center at Chicago.

When lightning jumps from a nearby object to a person, it often flashes over the skin. But metal in electronic devices -- or metal jewelry or coins in a pocket -- can cause contact burns and exacerbate the damage.

The report tells a incident where a 35-year-old jogger was caught in a thunderstorm in a Burnaby, B.C., park in June 2005. He was hit by lightning, which is bad enough, as he stood under a tree listening to music from his iPod.

The doctors didn't blame the iPod for attracting the lightning, they did say it contributed to his injuries. "Although the use of a device such as an iPod may not increase the chances of being struck by lightning, in this case, the combination of sweat and metal earphones directed the current to, and through, the patient's head," they claimed.

In addition, they emphasized that it's not just iPods people have to be concerned about -- anything similar that requires headphones or even cellphones being held to the ear during the storm could result in similar injuries.

Five False Myths About The Ipod Battery

Be it from critics or distinguished competitors, the Apple iPod has received many criticisms throughout the few years it has been in existence. The favorite target for complaints is the iPod battery. Most of these claims against the gadget are false, however. Below, you'll be able to read about the most famous, or infamous, of these myths, as well as a rundown of the facts.

1. That the iPod battery lasts for only 16 months. This is, perhaps, the biggest myth in the industry. The iPod's built-in battery is meant to last for a long, long time. In fact, the first batch of iPods, released over 4 years ago, are still functioning well, which is testament to the fact that the batteries are indeed long-lasting.

2. That the iPod's built-in battery can never be replaced. This is false. It can be replaced. What makes people think otherwise is the fact that the iPod's casing is not designed to be opened by the consumer. If the battery starts showing some defects, the consumer can send in the iPod unit for replacement within the warranty period of one year from the date of purchase. If the iPod unit is returned after the said period has elapsed, the consumer only needs to pay $59 for a new battery pack for his iPod.

3. That when the iPod battery runs its life, the user will lose all the files he has stored in his iPod unit. Technically, this is not true. Your audio files will be stored in the iPod's hard disk, which is not really functionally dependent of the battery. However, if you would return your iPod unit to Apple because of some battery defect, and the latter sends back a new unit instead of the old one with a new battery, you'd most definitely lose all your saved files. The solution is simple, however. Store all your audio files in your iTunes library. Thereafter, you could always re-synchronize your new iPod unit with your favorite audio files.

4. That overcharging your battery would destroy it. Ipod uses lithium ion batteries. Overcharging, per se, does not damage them. However, if you will use your iPod while its battery is in a continuously fully charged state, you'd run the risk of making it age faster, and in the process, shorten its life. A fully charged lithium ion battery matures at a more rapid pace than an optimally charged lithium ion power source.

5. That the Ipod Nano's packaging makes a false claim by stating that its battery life will last for 14 hours when it could only muster 7 hours. The claim of 14 hours is the optimal battery life that the iPod Nano can deliver, but a lot of factors will determine this. If your iPod unit has many programs running at the same time throughout the day, for example, you'd consume its reserved power at a faster rate. If your iPod battery has been serving you for many years now, it wouldn't be able to give you the optimal battery life span it could otherwise promise.

CES Unveiled

CES Unveiled is a CES press event that allows… well, press, to get a preview of some of the hottest items to be on display during CES. With over 80 exhibiting, we were able to check out some interesting products and talk to companies in a slightly less hectic atmosphere than on the actual showfloor come Monday. We have already posted several Spotlight articles covering the most interesting gadgets, doodads and even some really cool software applications. You can check out these articles and much more in our Pre-CES coverage. Unfortunately, we didn’t have enough time to cover each company and product in-depth, so here is our coverage of some of the companies whose products didn’t make it into our Spotlight articles.

Sandisk

Sandisk had a small demonstration set up to showcase their V-Mate video memory card reader. The V-Mate can capture and record analog video content directly to a flash memory card. Recorded videos can then be easily transferred to portable devices such as laptops, portable media players and cell phones. Additionally the V-Mate can schedule recordings based on channel, date and start/stop times. The plug ‘n’ play device needs no drivers and doesn’t even require a PC to operate.

Gaviri Technologies

The Gaviri guys are going to try giving Google a run for the desktop search software. While normally I’d say they didn’t have a chance, but they do seem to have a leg up. Their software will connect to all kinds of devices, spreading across desktops to laptops and PDAs. If they’re any good, I think they’ll get picked up like a cheap YouTube.

Interactive Toy Concepts

Once again Interactive Toy Concepts was back at CES Unveiled buzzing journalists with their impossibly tiny radio controlled helicopters. New to the lineup is the Blade Runner Recon chopper with 2.4 Ghz video camera mounted in the nose. Now spying on your friends and neighbors is more fun than ever. QVGA quality video is displayed live on the 2.2” video screen embedded on the radio controller. An additional USB connection allows for image uploading and memory expansion. On the way for Summer ‘07 is the Blade Runner 4. The next evolution in the Blade Runner series is more stable and nimble than before with an increased range of over 10 meters and it can even perform side to side full body roles. Also keep your eyes open for radio controlled cars, planes and snow mobiles from ITC as well. Interactive Toy Concept choppers are available at Radio Shack, eHobbies and other retailers.

Honda

Honda’s got their Asimo running around frolicking with the press folk, at least on the big-screens they’re showing him off on, which is really just a good example of the halo effect, how doing one seemingly-irrelevant project well can really bolster the image of a company in its entirety.

Spotlight: Belkin TuneStudio

This evening at the Pepcom Digital Experience Belkin introduced the TuneStudio for the 5th gen iPod video. TuneSudio is a 4 channel mixer that allows you to mix and record high quality music and voice directly to an iPod. Users will be able to record up to 4 different audio sources (microphones, instruments, auxillary sound input) to create increased production value tracks. TuneStudio can also be set up as an external USB sound card accepting audio inputs from PC sources and can output to a PC from TuneStudio’s wide array of connector inputs. The full feature list includes:

* Records directly to iPod in 16-bit, 44kHz quality
* Streams audio through built-in USB interface to and from a PC or Mac® computer
* Each channel is equipped with 3-band EQ, pan and level controls
* Phantom-power-enabled XLR inputs provide up to 60 dB of microphone gain
* High-quality stereo compressor with makeup gain enhances audio dynamics and keeps audio levels within recording limits of the iPod
* Features one-knob compression control
* LEDs indicate master audio level, power status, peak indication, compressor activity, and recording status

We can see this unit possibly becoming an ideal set up for podcasters as it is small enough to take out in the field and has a relatively small footprint ideal for a backroom studio. While obviously not a replacement for a full studio set up, DIY recording artists can shuttle audio signals to and from their PCs or Macs (most likely their Macs) via the USB connection. And at an MSRP of $179.99, it is considerably cheaper than renting out a studio. And as it saves your sessions to an iPod, getting your band’s music out onto the interweb doesn’t get much simpler. We’re about as far from studio musicians as can be, but the rows of gain knobs and columns of pretty recording level LEDs impressed us...flashing lights and switches are our weakness. The TuneStudio will be available in the summer of 2007 and will be introduced at the Mac World Expo 07 tomorrow, January 9th.

Creating Ipod-Ready Video Clips

Last year the fifth generation iPod was launched. The best thing about this latest release is its ability to store and play videos. However, the public was disappointed because the iPod’s companion software, iTunes, is unable to convert existing videos to a format that can be read by the iPod.

During that time, a third party software is required to be able to convert video clips for iPods. This is not the case anymore because the newest iTunes 6.0.2 comes with a video conversion tool to be able to transform video clips into an iPod-compatible format. As a typical Apple product, the conversion tool is subtly integrated into iTunes, so not everyone is able to maximize this feature. Here is a little tutorial to help you convert your video clips.

iTunes 6.0.2 is capable of converting Quick-Time compatible video formats into iPod-ready video files. These formats can be MOV, MPEG and MP4. These files are converted to H.264 format video. This handles videos that are 320 pixels wide. iTunes does not allow reconfiguring this setting. The format is great when the videos are viewed in iPods, but if these files are viewed on TV or PC, the quality is not as good.

The first step is to add your video clips to your iTunes library. This can be done by simply dragging and dropping them into your iTunes library window. Select the files you want to convert and then right click on your mouse button. A menu will popup and you have to select the option “Convert Selection for iPod”. iTunes will automatically convert the selected files into an iPod-ready video format. You will be able to monitor the status of the conversion process by clicking on “Source” and then “Converting Songs”.

After converting your video clips, you now how two files with the same content. You may delete the older file. It is very easy to distinguish between the two files. All you have to do is to check the file properties and look at the “Date Added” column.

Now that your video clips are compatible to your iPod, you may now transfer the files and begin viewing your favorite video clips anytime and anywhere!
