iPod: Changing the display language

Your iPod is multilingual and can be set to display one of many languages. If you've accidentally chosen the wrong language for your iPod, follow the steps below to change the language display.

  1. Reset your iPod—Depending on how much you've used your iPod since selecting the language, simply resetting your iPod may cause it to forget the current language setting, enabling you to select a new one. See "How to Reset iPod" for instructions.

Note: When you reset your iPod, all your music and data files are saved, though you may need to reset some customized settings.

  2. Update your iPod software—If you haven't updated your iPod software recently, use the latest iTunes 7 and update the iPod software.

  3. Go to the main menu—Disconnect your iPod from your computer, then press the Menu button until the menu title says "iPod," regardless of the language displayed. This means you are at the main menu.

  4. Select your language.
If you have an iPod nano or Fifth Generation iPod (iPod with video):
    1. Scroll down to the last menu option but don't select it.
    2. Scroll up one menu item. This should be Settings.
    3. Press the Center (Select) button. This takes you to the Settings menu.
    4. Scroll down to the last menu option but don't select it; in English, this is the "Reset All Settings" option.
    5. Scroll up to the third menu item from the bottom one. This should be Language.
    6. Press the Center button to select Language.
    7. Select your preferred language from the list.
  5. If you have an older iPod with color display (including iPod photo)
  6. Scroll to the fourth menu item in the screen and press the Center (Select) button. This takes you to the Settings menu.
  7. Scroll down to the last menu option but don't select it; in English, this is the "Reset All Settings" option.
  8. Scroll up to the third menu item from the bottom one. This should be Language.
  9. Press the Center button to select Language.
  10. Select your preferred language from the list.
If your iPod has a monochrome display (black and white):
  1. Scroll to the third menu item in the screen and press the Center (Select) button. This takes you to the Settings menu.
  2. Scroll down to the last menu option but don't select it; in English, this is the "Reset All Settings" option.
  3. Scroll up to the third menu item from the bottom one. This should be Language.
  4. Press the Center button to select Language.
  5. Select your preferred language from the list.

If the instructions above don't enable you to change the language on your iPod, try using the "Reset All Settings" option at the bottom of the Settings menu. If the Reset All Settings option does not work, you can restore your iPod back to factory condition and reselect the display language.

Troubleshooting iPod Games

If you have an issue with any game purchased from the iTunes Store, first verify basic functionality and then follow basic troubleshooting if necessary.

Note: Games available on iTunes are designed specifically for and compatible only with the Fifth Generation iPod (iPod with video). Any other current or future iPod models are not supported.

Verify functionality

  1. Verify that you have the latest version of iTunes. The current version is available at www.apple.com/ipod/start. iTunes 7 or later is required to sync games.
  2. Verify that you have the correct model iPod. To use games, you need an iPod with video (iPod Fifth Generation). See Identifying different iPod models.
  3. Verify that you have the correct version of iPod software running. To use games, you need version 1.2 or later. See iPod: How to find software version.
  4. Verify the Game tab appears when you click on iPod under devices in the Source pane of the iTunes window.

  5. Verify that iTunes is authorized to use the account you used to purchase the game. To learn how to do this, see About iTunes Store authorization and deauthorization.

If iTunes is not authorized for your iTunes Store account, you may see a message stating that "The game was not copied to the iPod because you are not authorized to play it on this computer".

  6. Verify the game syncs to iPod.
  7. Verify that the game title appears in Extras > Games.
  8. Verify that the game title launches from Extras > Games.

Troubleshooting

  1. Restore iPod with 1.2 or later of the iPod software.
  2. If you are syncing music automatically, you may want to turn on the "Manually manage music and videos" option under the Summary tab for the this test. You can turn off "Manuallly manage music and videos" when done.
  3. Sync just the respective game title. To do this:
    1. Select your iPod and click the Games tab.
    2. Select the Sync games checkbox.
    3. Click the "Selected games" button.
    4. Select only the game title you are currently troubleshooting.
  4. Click the Apply button.
  5. Eject iPod and verify that game title launches via Extras > Games.

iPod: TV Out support

The following iPod models have support for TV Out:

  • Fifth Generation iPod (iPod with video)
  • iPod with color display (iPod photo)

Note: Other iPod models may support viewing of photos or slideshows on the iPod display but do not support TV Out.

The following docks support TV Out when used with an iPod model that supports TV Out:

  • iPod Universal Dock
  • iPod with color display Dock (iPod photo Dock)

iPod models that support TV Out can support viewing on a television two different ways.

Method 1 (Composite video)
Using the AV cable connected directly to the top of the supported iPod or to the line out port on the supported dock.

Method 2 (S-video)
Using S-video when a supported iPod is in a supported dock.

Method 1 setup (Composite video)
This method can be used when the supported iPod is either in or out of the dock. Additionally, you would need a television or other video device that has RCA inputs.

  1. Make sure the TV out is set to "On" in the Slideshow Settings screen. To configure this setting, select Photos > Slideshow Settings > TV Out until TV Out is set to "On."
  2. Connect the AV cable into the iPod (where the earbuds would normally connect) or to the line out port on the dock.
  3. Connect the red RCA connection into the right audio input of the television.
  4. Connect the white RCA connection into the left audio input of the television.
  5. Connect the yellow RCA connection into the video input of the television.

Note: The RCA input connectors on a television are usually color coded to match the colors on the AV cable.

Method 2 setup (S-video)
This method provides slightly better image quality and should be used if possible. This method requires a television or other video device with S-video inputs. Additionally, S-video can only be used when the iPod is in a supported dock.

  1. Make sure the TV out is set to "On" in the Slideshow Settings screen. To configure this setting, select Photos > Slideshow Settings > TV Out until TV Out is set to "On."
  2. Place iPod in the dock.
  3. Connect a S-video cable to the S-video out port on the dock. This connection provides the video signal.
  4. Connect the other end of the S-video cable to the S-video input on the television.
  5. Connect the AV cable to the line out port on the dock. This connection provides the audio signal.
  6. Connect the red RCA connection into the right audio input of the television.
  7. Connect the white RCA connection into the left audio input of the television.

Some televisions may need to be set to channel 3 or 4 or "video" to receive input. Check with the documentation for your television if you're not sure.
