The Apple iPhone - Why

In January of 2007, Apple announced that it was entering into the portable phone market with the development and launch of the iPhone. Scheduled for release in June of 2007, the Apple iPhone will be able to play music like an iPod, surf and browse the web, take pictures, showcase videos, send text messages and emails, and, maybe, make or take a phone call or two.

Big deal.

For every new cell phone or cell phone company that introduces itself to the market, proclaiming that their particular model of cell phone can, say, play music, there are dozens of other names and brands, some popular, some not, that can do exactly the same thing. What's the catch? What's the hook? Where's the innovative technological design that's supposed to make the public stand up and take notice?

Now, the Apple iPhone does have complete virtual touch-screen. There are no raised buttons to press and push, and everything is operated with the sense of a finger. Now, that actually is a cool feature, but, it might not be completely practical. Why? Simply because when I look at my hands, I see chubby fingers that are not going to be able to accurately press any button on a small touch screen. Now, unless that screen is 6" across, which, if that were the case, might defeat the entire mobility purpose of the phone.

Why does Apple feel the need to develop and create their own portable phone? Could it be that they really want to revolutionize portable communication? Do they want to make the world a better place? Can they offer something that no one else can?

Look at it this way: why does Lindsay Lohan think she could sing?

Because it's another revenue stream to be mined, that's why? Now, there's no doubt that the iPhone is cool, and will find a popular and receptive audience. But, like Lohan's singing attempts, it doesn't really improve the world and the world wouldn't notice it if it weren't around. It's just there, and it will make money. Partially because of its features, partially because of curiosity seekers, and partially because of people loyal to the brand name.

No one is begrudging Apple for getting in on the portability craze. After all, Apple may have taken that craze to incredible heights with the development and release of the iPod. So, it makes sense, then, to fuse the iPod with a cellular phone. But, it's already been done before.

Maybe the real issue is that if Apple released a phone without web, email, video player and other bells and whistles, that it simply wouldn't sell and just sit there on the shelves. If Lindsay Lohan had to sing on her own merits, she might be joining that lonely phone. But, add some studio effects, create some stylish videos and surround her with talented musicians, and she becomes passable and tolerable.

In today's ultra-connected world, it seems that no one will buy a cell phone for the expressed purpose of having a phone with you while on the go. You need to have everything or your will appear to be nothing.

Look Where We Are Today

Everybody and every place is now doing it. Hell, you can even get online access at McDonald's and Burger King. There is a small charge at these 2 places but Panera Bread offers it for free to customers. I have always told people in the past that if they want to get online and don't have internet access at home then they should visit their local library. Pretty soon, while going to the bathroom, you will be able to access the internet.

I'm suprised that Steve Jobs has not done something with this yet. I mean he has Ipods that are toilet paper dispensers so you can listen to music while in the bathroom. He has tennis shoes, Nike i believe, that have a built in Ipod. What about shoes with the ability to check your emails? What about hats that allow you to either watch TV or surf the net? We are getting so very close to being able to do things like this.

50 years ago if you had told people that pretty soon we would be buying water in the bottle they would have thought you were nuts. What about paying $3 for a cup of coffeee? I remember being able to get a burger and a cup of coffee for a buck. I can ever remember comic books for only a quarter. I was looking at comic books at wal-Mart the other day and I almost had a heart attack, some of them were almost $10, most were at least $5.

When I was about 5 years old I still have this memory of my dad complaining about the 32 cents per gallon for gasoline. Imagine if he could have taken a look into the future to see the $4 we were paying last year? I used to work in an ice cream parlor when I was just out of high school and senior citizens were always asking about ice cream cones with a scoop of ice cream for like a quarter.

Think back to when people only had maybe a radio for entertainment, life must have been boring back then. Look at everything a kid has at their disposal today. Remember the video game pong and breakout. Thats all that was available when I was a kid. I had a handheld football game but that was only a light you had to push across a small screen.

How to protect all your iPod tunes

iTunes: Adding song lyrics to iPod

If you like to sing along with your tunes, you can display song lyrics right on the screen of a supported iPod. This includes:

iPod nano

Fifth Generation iPod

Entering lyrics In iTunes 5 or later, select a favorite song.

From the File menu, choose Get Info.

Click Lyrics, then enter the words to the song in the text box.

Click OK when finished.

Copy the song to iPod.

Viewing lyrics If you've entered song lyrics, you can view them at any time in iTunes 5 or later. Just select the song, Get Info for the song, and then click Lyrics. If you want to view them on iPod, do this:

On iPod, start playing any song to which you've added lyrics.

Press the Center button repeatedly. The number of times depends on if you have artwork or not. Here's the order of things when you press the Center button:

Play status > Scrubber > Album Art > Lyrics/Description > Rating

If you don't have Album Art or Lyrics, then you'll just see the Rating

Play status > Scrubber > Rating

Lyrics should display correctly in most languages. If they do not, try removing any special characters in the Lyrics pane in iTunes, copy the song back to iPod, and try again.

Note: Some types of files such as WAV and QuickTime files don't support lyrics, though you can convert WAV and QuickTime files into a format that would allow you to add lyrics such as AAC or MP3.

Here's a cautionary tale, plus some tips on how to preserve your tunes if this nightmare scenario happens to you.

Most of us essentially do just that every time we sync our iPod using iTunes, but if you're a power user like Weaser and you have untold thousands of songs on your iPod from multiple sources, the standard iTunes sync won't cut it. Luckily, The Gadgets Page has compiled a thorough list of iPod backup utilities that promise to keep your music safe and sound. Even better, these apps can transfer songs from your iPod back to your PC if, say, the hard drive on your system suffers a meltdown

Just remember that these backup programs aren't sanctioned by Apple, and that using them to rip songs from your buddy's iPod to your PC or Mac is, of course, a no-no.

why can't we put songs from someone else's iPOD on our PC?

its pretty much the same as borrowing a CD from them except its on a hard drive not a standard disk. I keep my iTUNES library backed up to DVD, so if I have a crash I don't have to recompile my whole music collection. and yes, I have let friends borrow the discs to put some songs on their computers, is that a crime?

As my friend has found out, it is easy enough to defeat any of the rights management

software codes by just burning a CD with the protected tunes, and then ripping them back into your music library . He wasn't trying to become a digital pirate, just get his tunes from one place to another, tunes that he had legitimately bought and paid for. I told him, operators at the Recording Industry of America are standing by to call his lawyer. But I don't want to get off track here and turn this into a rant against copy protection
