Troubleshooting iPod Games

If you have an issue with any game purchased from the iTunes Store, first verify basic functionality and then follow basic troubleshooting if necessary.

Note: Games available on iTunes are designed specifically for and compatible only with the Fifth Generation iPod (iPod with video). Any other current or future iPod models are not supported.

Verify functionality

  1. Verify that you have the latest version of iTunes. The current version is available at www.apple.com/ipod/start. iTunes 7 or later is required to sync games.
  2. Verify that you have the correct model iPod. To use games, you need an iPod with video (iPod Fifth Generation). See Identifying different iPod models.
  3. Verify that you have the correct version of iPod software running. To use games, you need version 1.2 or later. See iPod: How to find software version.
  4. Verify the Game tab appears when you click on iPod under devices in the Source pane of the iTunes window.

  5. Verify that iTunes is authorized to use the account you used to purchase the game. To learn how to do this, see About iTunes Store authorization and deauthorization.

If iTunes is not authorized for your iTunes Store account, you may see a message stating that "The game was not copied to the iPod because you are not authorized to play it on this computer".

  6. Verify the game syncs to iPod.
  7. Verify that the game title appears in Extras > Games.
  8. Verify that the game title launches from Extras > Games.

Troubleshooting

  1. Restore iPod with 1.2 or later of the iPod software.
  2. If you are syncing music automatically, you may want to turn on the "Manually manage music and videos" option under the Summary tab for the this test. You can turn off "Manuallly manage music and videos" when done.
  3. Sync just the respective game title. To do this:
    1. Select your iPod and click the Games tab.
    2. Select the Sync games checkbox.
    3. Click the "Selected games" button.
    4. Select only the game title you are currently troubleshooting.
  4. Click the Apply button.
  5. Eject iPod and verify that game title launches via Extras > Games.
